COCHIN BOLGHATTY PALACE

Bolghatty Palace is a beautiful monument located on the Bolghatty Island just off the coast of Cochin. It is easily accessible with the help of the ferry services that are provided for tourists. Dutch merchants built a villa on an Island called 'Ponnikkara' in the year 1744. The villa was subsequently extended lush green gardens were landscaped around it and the villa, or palace as it now was became identified with the island itself. It was then called the Bolghatty Palace and became an imortant picnic resort for the Dutch. During the British time, it was converted into Residency. After India's independence Bolghatty Palace became the property of the State and was converted into a hotel.It has 5 large rooms in the main palace and 6 newly built cottages. All rooms have attached bath.


Chendamangalam Fort
The Chendamangalam Fort is located in a small town in Ernakulam district of Cochin. Chendamangalam Fort of Kochi Kerala is situated at about 42 kilometers from Ernakulam district of Kerala. The fort is surrounded by vast expanses of lush green landscape and small hillocks and has 3 rivers flowing nearby. The fort is 450 years old and houses some rare artifacts, relics and historical documents. You will find not only a unique amalgamation of various natural resources, but you will be amazed to see the unique blend of cultures too. One can find a temple, a mosque and a church in close proximity in Chendamangalam fort.
This region used to be the lodging place of the Paliath Achans, the official Prime Minister of Maharaja of Kochi. Another place of interest is the Vypeenkotta Institution built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. Right next to the seminary is an old Catholic Church built in the 11th century. In India, the first printing press was set up over here.
Kunchan Smarakam Fort
Located 30 kilometers from Palakkad, the Kunchan Smarakam fort of Palakkad Kerala is not a usual historical monument. It is a memorial built as a tribute for the famous poet of Kerala, Kunchan Nambiar. The monument now serves as an institution for young people interested in satirical art form. The festival of "Navaratri" is celebrated with much grandeur and opulence here. The birthday of the poet, which falls on 5th of May, is also celebrated with much fanfare. The monument is a must visit if you want to see the nurture of talent in caring hands.
Koyikkal Palace
Located at Nedumangad, 18 kilometers from Trivandrum, Koyikkal Palace is a major tourist attraction. This ancient palace is built in the traditional Kerala architectural style with slanting roofs and a courtyard inside. This palace was built for Umayamma Rani of the Venad royal family. This magnificent double storied palace now houses two museums, set up by the Archaeology Department. The Koyikkal Palace of Thiruvananthapuram is a beautiful monument that stands as an evidence of the rich historical legacy of Kerala. The two museums in the palace are the Folklore museum and Numismatics museum. The Folklore museum was set up in the year 1992 and houses many ancient musical instruments and models of folk arts. One can also find rare articles like an ancient percussion instrument that was used while a ballad like Ramayana. Another small instrument that was a very sweet sounding instrument, made of wood and string is also exhibited over here. This instrument was used during Onam festival in Kerala in old days. The museum also has a number of household utensils made in brass and copper that was used during ancient times.
The Numismatics museum over here is one of its kind, as it houses a vast collection of coins from different eras. An ancient coin belonging to the Venetian era is also exhibited here and it is believed that this coin was presented to Jesus Christ. Ancient coins belonging to the time when trade first started in Kerala are also exhibited over here. The museum has a huge collection of Roman coins and also has coins belonging to different empires that ruled India.
Poonjar Palace
Located in the Kottayam, Poonjar Palace is a scintillating evidence of the magnificent and royal collection of the rich past of this place. The palace has an amazing collection of royal antiques like palanquin, weapons of warfare, grand chandeliers, jewel boxes and beautiful sculptures of Nataraja (dancing pose of Lord Shiva). In Kottayam, Poonjar Palace is a popular haunt among tourists and the palace never fails to fascinate people. The walls of this temple are beautifully decorated with sculptures and carvings that depict scenes from the ancient Puranas. A stunning replica of the famous Madurai Meenakshi temple is built right next to this palace and worth a visit. The most amazing sculpture over here is the Chuttuvilakku or rock cut lamps that stand majestically in a row. This is a rare sight in India and is worth a watch. The palace also has a conch that is taken out once in a year for traditional rituals. It is truly a magnificent place to visit and will give you an idea of the glorious past of Kottayam.
